It is the mission of the Atlanta Jazz Festival to expose and entertain a diverse audience of jazz aficionados, young jazz enthusiasts and musical artists to the rich heritage and variety of jazz as an authentic form of traditional music. For 33 years, the festival has brought to Atlanta world‐renowned performers such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Etta James, Hiroshima, Neville Brothers, Al Jarreau, Branford Marsalis & Wynton Marsalis, Nina Simone and Dizzy Gillespie. WHEN: 31 Days of Jazz - May 1 through May 31, 2010 Atlanta Jazz Festival Memorial Day Weekend Celebration - Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30, 2010 WHERE: Various venues throughout Atlanta; Memorial Day Weekend Festival is at Piedmont Park, Atlanta, GA COST: Admission to the Memorial Day Weekend Festival is FREE. Other events during the 31 Days of Jazz may have a cost. Experience more than 50 jazz‐related events during the 31 Days of : Jazz, including the Memorial Day Weekend concert series. Events throughout the month include various daytime and nighttime performances in Atlanta area parks, free and ticketed evening events in night clubs, concert halls, eclectic venues and restaurants throughout the city. The 2010 Memorial Day Weekend concert series includes many legendary jazz sensations. This year's line‐up will feature such critically acclaimed artists as Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue; Kathleen Bertrand; Swing Streets to Swing Beats featuring Esperanza Spalding and Raydar Ellis; MF Production's Celebration of Lionel Hampton featuring Diane Schuur and Jason Marsalis; Marcus Miller's 'Tutu Revisited the music of Miles Davis' featuring Christian Scott; and Stanley Clarke Band with Hiromi. Unique jazz events take place throughout metro Atlanta during the entire month of May. Our Nightlife Series includes live jazz at bars and nightclubs including Uptown Supper Club and Library Coffee Company. Jazz lovers can also enjoy music in eclectic Atlanta spots such as Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport and WineStyles Cascade as well as enjoy a meal with their music at restaurant hotspots like Landon's Restaurant & Bar. For late night jazz lovers, the Atlanta Jazz Festival is proud to bring Late Night Jazz Jams to the new Loews Hotel Atlanta, the official Festival host hotel, Saturday, May 29. After a full day of diverse jazz artists, festival attendees can wind down with a little rhythm, as both professional and amateur musicians freestyle together. This is your chance to sit in with jazz greats! Come jam the night away. OTHER ACTIVITIES: Enjoy artist vendors and fantastic festival food options at the Market Place, beer and live music from local artists at the new Anheuser Oasis Beer Garden and children's activities like jump rope and hula hoop contest s and healthy living tips at the Publix KidZone. The Memorial Day Weekend festival is perfect for the entire family! ACCOLADES: The Atlanta Jazz Festival, recipient of the 2009 Greener Festival Award, is expanding on its commitment to sustainability in recycling, transportation and event administration through the 'Green Jazz 2010 Initiative.' This program will include: - Recycling Center - deposit center for cans and plastic beverage containers - Biodiesel recycling plan for waste vegetable oil from concessions - Food Vendors will be required to use paper products versus styrofoam - Eco‐friendly Transportation: Public Transit, car pooling, walking & bike riding - All printed collateral on recycled paper - Green Host Hotel Partner : W Hotel Midtown - Use of online mediums - Website, Facebook, Twitter - to promote the festival thereby using less paper and ink SPECIAL NEEDS: The following park entrances are wheelchair accessible: 12th Street Gate, 14th Street Gate, Charles Allen Drive Gate and Park Drive SPONSORS: American Family Insurance, Publix, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc, The Coca Cola Company, Anheuser Busch and Jazz Times Magazine PARK RULES: Per a City of Atlanta ordinance and for the safety of our patrons, NO pets will be allowed in the park during festival hours. This ban does NOT apply to service animals for disabled persons. All others will be asked to return their pet to their home and/or will be cited for the violation. No glass bottles, grilling, tents, bicycles, skating or staking is allowed at the festival.
