Ken Batie - Atlanta Hot Ice
Ken Batie (1960 - 2007), best known for his contemporary jazz show on Atlanta's WCLK Jazz 91.9 FM called "Hot Ice In The Afternoon," passed away Monday, February 12th. He will be remembered for turning the next generation of listeners onto jazz and soul music, having broken many Giant Step-family artists like India Arie, Omar, Donnie, Incognito, Brand New Heavies, and Jiva, while pushing the boundaries of WCLKs strict jazz repertoire by playing George Howard, Marcus Miller and Lee Ritenour. Paired with an affable personality and a dogged mentality for breaking musical conventions, mentions of Ken Batie often demands comparisons to British disc-jockey legend John Peel. Unfortunately in 2005, Batie's "Hot Ice" show was canceled due to unmet fundraising support. However, his presence lived on at the station and he will continue to influence the community long after his passing. Batie suffered from a myriad of maladies from liver failure to arrhythmia and leg ulcers. -- #198 Posted on Monday, February 8, 2010 -- All News | About | Bios | Events | Features | Newsletters Poems | Spotlights | Videos ![]() |
